What to do? Where to go? What to see?

We've spent the last few weeks pondering these questions and have considered many different options.  We have come to this decision, which will separate our travels into three segments:

Segment 1: August - Mid October
INDIA!  With a five day stop in Amsterdam on our way there

Segment 2: Mid October - Jan 1st
US Travel - dates/place not yet scheduled

Segment 3: Jan - May
Spanish Language Immersion programs, volunteering, and sightseeing
Latin America (possibilities - Southern Mexico, Guatemala, Peru)

Click on "Curious?" at the top to see a calendar of our tentative schedule.  More details to come!!

We are officially cool. Portsmouth (pronounced "port-smith" and called P-town to some local kine) is apparently where we can get a little bit of "hood in us." Whoever told me this must have forgotten that we grew up in NM where we all have a little "hood in us" unless you live behind the gates of Tanoan or are from Santa Fe. Portsmouth feels like a whole different world from our apartment in Norfolk. It has a small-town, local spirit and is happy to stay that way! There are more churches in one block than seems possible, as well as a historic downtown area with little shops and restaurants, including an old refurbished theater that is now The Commodore. It's a movie theater where they show one or two news films and serve food and drinks during the show. It's on my must-do list.

We're staying at a beautiful historic home at Swimming Point, right by the Elizabeth River. The home belongs to Henry and Annelore Butler, who are in Germany for the month of July. They needed someone to house-sit and cat-sit, and we needed a place to live, so it was a perfect arrangement. My new friends are quite cuddly and provide good company. I interrupted their third round of pre-noon naps to catch their cuteness.

So, we will be Portsmouthians (sp?) for the remainder of our time in Hampton Roads. We leave July 31st to head off on our one year travel adventure. I intend to blog our travels, which will provide a way to journal our experiences as well as keep our family and friends updated on our wanderings. Stay tuned for more details!

In the meantime, our cellphones are the same and if you need our address it is P.O. Box 86, Portsmouth, VA 23705. Starting August 1st, we'll be using Rob's parents' address, which is 6715 Hundred Acre Drive, Cocoa, FL 32927.
